Retail & Leisure Project of the Year

Entry Criteria

From supermarkets, restaurants and coffee shops, to shopping centres and fitness centres, this award is open to large and small-scale projects – in both footprint, scope and cost – that has used structural timber and a timber-led methodology from initial design to final completion.

Entries must display a clear understanding of how to apply timber technologies to deliver a sustainable, energy efficient and cost-effective contemporary building that enables the client to achieve its corporate vision – aesthetically and in a scalable way.

Particular note will be given to overcoming restrictive/unusual construction sites and working within local planning guidelines.

Projects must display a clear understanding of how to apply timber technology and explain how they have displayed innovation and worked collaboratively to help the client achieve its corporate vision whilst demonstrating cost-predictability, economy, accuracy, transportability, speed of installation, sustainability and circular economy principles.

Entry Questions:

1. Describe the reasons behind the specification of timber technology as the central construction method or key element of the project and why this approach was chosen when compared to competing materials.

2. Explain how the use of timber technology has provided a major element in the delivery of the final project – e.g. cost-predictability, long term value, enhanced brand recognition, overall building performance, sustainability, quality of design, speed of installation and building running costs.

3. How has the project provided a unique and innovative solution when benchmarked against competing materials – e.g. quality, installation, planning concerns, social value impact, circular economy principles, health and safety and maintenance.

4. Describe the collaborative working methods used across the timber construction supply chain – did the client play a leading role in choosing timber as a key construction method and would they specify it again?

5. Give FIVE key reasons why your project is exceptional and should be considered as the best example this year. Can it be seen as a future example for others to follow, e.g. meeting clients brand demands and expectations, aesthetics, low carbon approach, thermal efficiency, waste reduction, engineering excellence, installation ease. Will it be applied to future developments?
