Healthcare Project of the Year

Entry Criteria

The pressure on the UK’s healthcare sector is huge. With changing demographics and budgets always a focus, the public purse must deliver better, higher quality and more cost-effective buildings for patients and staff.

This category celebrates those projects that have used timber technology to create a newbuild facility, a retrofit/refurbishment or extension in a streamlined way, on-time and on-budget reducing impact on clinical care. The facility can be for any type of healthcare, primary care, GP surgery, hospitals, care homes or facilities catering for age related/specialist needs.

Patient, staff and visitor experience is at the heart of successful healthcare projects, and the winner must prove that it has met the healthcare provider and/or the NHS Trust’s expectations in providing a sustainable, energy efficient and cost-effective contemporary building, whilst demonstrating how quality, cost-predictability, budget constraints, speed of installation and high levels of site-sensitivity have been achieved.

Entry Questions:

1. Describe the reasons behind the specification of timber technology as the central construction method or key element of the project and why this approach was chosen when compared to competing materials.

2. Explain how the use of timber technology has provided a major element in the delivery of the final project – e.g. reduced disruption for patients and staff, clinical and site-sensitivities, cost and budget-predictability, speed of installation, long term value, overall sustainability and building performance.

3. Evidence how the project has been judged by the NHS Trust, healthcare provider, staff and patients.

4. How has the project provided a unique and innovative solution when benchmarked against competing materials – e.g. quality, speed of delivery, installation, planning concerns, circular economy principles, ease to extend/deconstruct, health and safety and long-term maintenance.

5. Describe the collaborative working methods across the timber supply chain and involvement with the NHS Trust/authority/clinical team — did they play a leading role in choosing timber as a key construction method and would they specify it again? Please add any testimonials if appropriate.
