Custom & Self-Build Project of the Year

This category seeks to find the best self-build and custom-built properties on an individual or small community basis. The finished building or development must have a timber system at its core and have used the material in a fundamentally important structural way – e.g. timber frame, SIPS or mass timber technology.
The finished building or development should display high levels of technical skill, expertise and understanding of using timber effectively as an aesthetic, sustainable/low carbon, energy efficient and reliable way to build a stylish and memorable ‘dream house’.
Entry Questions:
1. Clearly demonstrate the reasons behind the choice of timber for the project and the ways in which the material has been successful used to create a quality finished home, e.g. final finish, aesthetics, sustainability/low carbon, comfort and meeting the developer/ homeowner’s lifestyle expectations.
2. How did the architect, design and delivery team work together to make the project as seamless and defect free as possible, e.g. planning consent, product/system delivery, site management, erection and installation – was a turnkey approach used?
3. Explain how your use of timber has enhanced the overall building performance, aesthetics, improved wellbeing for occupants, delivered energy efficiency within a realistic and achievable timescale.
4. Explain your approach to sustainability, how you have employed circular economy principles, measured carbon and quantified environmental impact, waste reduction, biomimicry, less transport, home running costs in delivering this home. Please highlight use of PEFC/FSC and certified material where appropriate.
5. Demonstrate that the project has provided a high quality, unique and innovative home and achieved the vision of the homeowner/developer. Please include suitable testimonials from the homeowner/developer on their feelings about the process and support for the final building and choice of timber.
